The first lady of the United States, Michelle Obama spoke to a room full of young activists from Girl Up clubs from all over the world earlier this week.

Obama praised the group for its work promoting education for girls. One of the first lady’s priorities is her “Let Girls Learn” initiative.

She also made two important points during her speech about activism.

Her first point: Activism should be personal. Obama stated, “Start with whatever issue moves you here” as she pressed her hand to her heart.

Second point: An activist who takes on a huge issue like girls’ education could end up feeling “heartbroken, angry, overwhelmed.” Obama stressed how important it was to remember the issue you’re facing will not be solved all at once.
